Senior Thesis Project
Humans and bees share a fundamental need: both require community and a healthy environment to truly thrive.
Inspired by this parallel, 88Apiary is a Geriatric Wellness and Caregiver Resource Center dedicated to helping seniors find renewed purpose and independence through a profound connection with nature and each other. It addresses the need for a redefined senior experience, while simultaneously providing care for those who care.
The center is envisioned for Sacramento County, an area where a rapidly growing senior population is placing immense pressure on existing facilities. In this highly diverse region, many families come from immigrant backgrounds where elder care traditionally falls on children and relatives. Without access to the right support or resources, both seniors and their caregivers often struggle to manage health challenges alone.
To address this, 88Apiary embraces the "Social Pollinator" concept. Inspired by the movement of bees and the interconnected, vivid communities within hives, the design focuses on movement, craft, and exchange. The space operates as a living system in which people, ideas, and activities constantly circulate and connect, ensuring everyone plays a vital part in keeping the apiary flourishing.
